Slowly but surely we’re getting through this semester! One week at a time! I’ve bundled my stars & daily creates into blog posts so I’ll just post them below so that you can see explanations & all that good stuff. Be sure to read all the way to the bottom of my week 11 stars to see how I tied my character in! Enjoy!
What a week. I need a breather! Read about my experience with the video essay & view it here:

Can’t wait to see everyone else’s radio segments!!
We started out brainstorming ideas for our radio show this week & ended up coming to a conclusion pretty quickly!
Then I created my own radio show sticker!
I used my first two assignments to work towards completing our segment:
And my last one was just for fun!
Lastly, I completed three daily creates:

And that was it! I’m working on completing my segment of our radio show for next week.
This week was design week, & I had been looking forward to it. We started off by reading The Vignelli Canon & Brain Pickings article about Kidd and his book, and then wrote a reflective piece about the readings & what we had learned.
Next I started working on my 12 stars worth of assignments. I decided to do a few big assignments this week since I don’t have much free time. Mine are shown below, along with commentary on my process.
Then I tackled the Design Blitz. I liked the photo blitz we did better, but this one was still fun! See mine with commentary below:
Lastly, I completed my three daily create’s on twitter. I usually put an explanation in my tweet so that the people who see it on twitter can make sense of them as well. Check them out below!
#tdc2453 #ds106 I watched 21 jump street (again) today & this made me think of this… there’s people who actually know what they’re doing & then there’s me who just thinks I know what I’m doing pic.twitter.com/MlNJ46ZcqB

That wrapped up Design Week! I can’t wait to see everyone else’s creations!
These weeks just keep getting more and more challenging! I was scared for audio week because I figured there would be a ton of music involved and I know nothing about music tempo or beats or whatever they call it! Luckily, I was able to mostly use freesounds.org to pull audio clips for my assignments.
We kicked off the week by watching How Radio Creates Empathy & Digital Shamanism and Old-Fashioned, Newfangled Storytelling Magi. Then we listened to “Moon Graffiti” and followed it up with a reflective blog post about how sound drives stories. This is mine:
Then we were challenged to tune into a live tweet-along. Although it was offered 4 days this week, I only got to tune into Tuesday because of other classes and meetings. See how I felt about it & my string of tweets here:

Creating a radio bumper was kind of tricky for me to plan. Find out why & listen to my final product here:
Tackling my 12 stars worth of assignments wasn’t too bad! There was lots of fun assignments to choose from. See the 4 I picked & their individual challenges below, including my sound effects story where I tied my character in.
Until next week, DS106.
How are we already on week 4?! Time flies when you’re drowning in homework and severely sleep deprived. I was really excited for this week since I have ZERO photo editing experience. I realized that it is definitely not as easy as it looks and I am once again not good at it.
We started off our week with a reflection of previous photography experience after reading Becoming a Better Photographer and Photography and narrative: What is involved in telling a story? Check mine out below!
Then we picked a movie to analyze and try to pinpoint different aspects of good photography. Of course I chose Tangled, and it worked really well!! If you’re having issues identifying the different aspects of photography read my post below, I tried to make it clear & helpful!
Then I did a fun little What’s in your bag? exercise for Manny. I thought about what I as a mom and nanny would need if I were a super manny. It ended up being pretty practical! Read it below!
Then we got free roam of the visual assignments. I chose two 4 star assignments and a 2 star assignment. My first 4 star assignment involved some photo editing and was pretty tricky. My perfectionist self is still not happy with it but it will do while i get used to the software! Again, I love Tangled so I used that movie again for my Family Friendly Billboard assignment below.
Next I took my editing skills a step further and completed the Forrest Gump Project. I put myself into Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech. This was a bit harder since it was black and white but I think it turned out better!! Again, you can get to it by clicking the post below.
Lastly, I had a bit of fun with the Bucket List assignment. I picked my top 4 “bucket list items” and found pictures to go with them. I ran into an issue at the end… Check it out below to see what happened!
Throughout the week I did 3 daily creates.
On Tuesday we did pre-internet memes, which immediately made me think of this spongebob gif.
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 19, 2018
On Wednesday (Talk like a pirate Day) I struggled a bit… until I embraced my inner Jack Sparrow. While he can be wildly inappropriate, he sure is amusing.
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 20, 2018
On Thursday we had to share or create a horror sound. I wandered around trying to make noises out of various things before I came across my hairbrush that sounded eerie. To me it sounds like tons of spiders crawling towards me… what do you think?

That was it for my Daily Creates!!
Last but not least, I did my first ever Photoblitz. It was harder than I thought it would be. Check out my process below
And that wrapped up week 4!
Happy Friday everyone! Enjoy your weekend!
I loved this week. I’m much more of a writer than someone who can edit pictures or write software (not even sure that’s the write lingo), so I was grateful for a manageable week.
Our story analysis was tricky for me. I couldn’t really connect with any of the examples we were given, so I went back to my trusty favorite: Tangled. The background readings and video made much more sense when I applied them to the movie. Read all about it here!
Creating a character really stressed me out. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and it took me a while to figure something out. I decided to stray away from my trusty mythology characters and go with something more “me.” Meet Manny the Super Nanny here.
Then we had our writing assignments that we got to choose. I used to write Haikus all of the time in elementary school, so I used Rapunzel once again to get more into it. I’m still not 100% happy with it but it’ll do! The 5/7/5 limit is tricky.
Then I went for a more personal assignment. We were supposed to pick an emotion and then choose there songs that made you feel the emotion you chose. Go check out my very own “sadness” playlist. They’re some of my favorite songs and never fail to make me emotional. Each of them is very personal to me.
I kept with he personal feel for the next assignment, and wrote a letter to myself. The assignment was to address your future self (in 10 years) and convey your hopes and dreams. Read about my one true hope that encompasses all hopes below.
Lastly, I wrote to my mom. This was hard for me because there’s just so much to say, I tried to condense it down to the main points and keep it short and sweet. Read about how awesome my mom is in the blog post below.
And of course, we had our daily creates. We started off our week by remembering 9/11. This day changed all of our lives, even those who were not alive for it. We’ll always remember.
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 12, 2018
Next we played around with badges, and I shamelessly called out my boyfriend for being terrible at texting. Love him to death, but LORD he’s bad at remembering to respond to me. I didn’t know how to use the software so it took a bit of getting used to, but once I got it I had a blast!
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 13, 2018
Lastly, we found Gremlins in our computers! I found this image on a google search and thought it was too perfect not to use.
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 13, 2018
It took me forever to finally get this up!! Thank God Florence avoided us, but we had our own little hurricane over here this week… My sweet fur baby (Faith) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer in her spine and hips. I spend most of my week and weekend at the vet & carrying her around everywhere. Thank goodness we had the extended deadline because I needed it. Have a great week everyone!
What a week! Last week I felt way over my head and didn’t really know what was going on. This week I felt like I had a better grasp on the assignments and computer programs, and was able to get a bit more into it. I loved the daily creates! They helped me get a bit more into things without overwhelming me with large assignments. Check mine out!

This was my feeble attempt at “knocking strangely.” I wandered around my house knocking on things until I found something that I thought sounded “strange.” This one ended up being my son’s clock!
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 5, 2018
At first I was trying to make waves like the ocean (since I’m SERIOUSLY missing the beach) but it looked too sharp to be waves. I decided I’d go with an airplane since I went to Texas a few weeks ago! It’s still not great, but I’ll take it.
— Kara (@KaraDS106) September 6, 2018
I’m always seeing doubles with my crazy girls! I snapped this as soon as I picked them up from school today. Love these doubles!
I loved exploring the assignment bank! I wanted to try a variety of assignments so I scrolled through the groups and picked my favorites. I LOVE GIFs so I tried the TV Show GIFs assignment first! Check out my blog post with my creations here (especially if you watch Bachelor in Paradise.)
Lastly, I decided to do something more personal. I chose the Five Frame Story assignment, but put my own spin on it. Rather than telling someone else’s story, I told mine. Get a glimpse into my life here.
This week was a lot more fun! I finally figured out what was happening with Slack and how to access everyone else’s blogs so that I can get more involved. If I’ve commented on too much of your stuff- this is my public apology. The work everyone is doing is awesome! Happy Thursday everyone, and have a great rest of your week 🙂
What a week! I thought that this class would be easy since it’s a 100 level class… but ignored the fact that technology hates me. Setting up my social media accounts was much more challenging than I thought it would be. I had NO idea how to work soundcloud, slack, or a domain. It took me hours to figure out how to create and account and then navigate that account. You can check out my intro posts here. Warning: be ready to cringe. I am NOT good with technology. I’m super awkward in front of a camera and hate listening to my own voice. I know that this class will help my skills in these areas develop so much, but right now I’m just suffering.
These theme makes me nervous as well. I’ve never been into folklore, so this will take a bit of getting used to. I’m hoping that I’ll slowly be able to get into the theme and connect with it more. If you want to hear my feelings on the theme and know about my ultimate favorite legend, check out that post by clicking here. I can’t wait to get more into this course and start to get more into it!
I am really excited about the blogs. I like being able to express myself through words and have been able to figure out wordpress and our domains easier than the other social media platforms. Being able to review and edit my posts makes me feel more in control than sitting in front of a camera for youtube.
Onto week 2! Have a great extended weekend everyone!
